Why Precise Vocabulary Matters in telc Deutsch B2
The oral and written exams assess more than grammatical accuracy. The examiners also look at how clearly, appropriately and flexibly you express your thoughts. In telc assessment materials, this area is connected with the term Ausdrucksfähigkeit, or ability to express yourself.
A strong result does not require you to use academic or unusual words in every sentence. It is much more important to be able to:
avoid noticeable repetition;
choose a word with the exact meaning you need;
use common collocations correctly;
distinguish between spoken and formal styles;
connect your ideas logically;
support an opinion with an argument.
Instead of simply saying that an idea is “good”, you can explain whether it is sinnvoll (sensible), praktisch (practical), vorteilhaft (advantageous), geeignet (suitable) or überzeugend (convincing). Instead of repeating “This is important”, you can show that an aspect plays a central role, is of great importance or is decisive.
Precision, rather than artificial complexity, is what improves the quality of your language.

Precise Alternatives for Speaking and Writing
1. Gut: Explain Why Something Is Positive
The word gut is extremely flexible, which makes it easy to overuse:
Die Idee ist gut. Der Ort ist gut. Der Plan ist gut.
The idea is good. The location is good. The plan is good.
At B2 level, it is better to identify the specific positive quality.
Sinnvoll — sensible and useful for achieving a goal
Use sinnvoll when a suggestion helps solve a problem or reach a particular goal.
Es wäre sinnvoll, die Eintrittskarten im Voraus zu buchen, damit wir nicht lange warten müssen.
It would make sense to book the admission tickets in advance so that we do not have to wait for a long time.
Deine Idee klingt sinnvoll, weil sie sowohl Zeit als auch Geld spart.
Your idea sounds sensible because it saves both time and money.
Praktisch — practical and convenient
Ein Treffpunkt direkt am Bahnhof wäre für die gesamte Gruppe praktisch.
A meeting point directly at the station would be convenient for the whole group.
This word is particularly useful when discussing organisation, accessibility or ease of implementation.
Geeignet — suitable for a particular purpose
Der Stadtpark wäre für ein Familienfest besonders geeignet.
The city park would be particularly suitable for a family celebration.
Dieses Angebot ist für Personen geeignet, die flexibel lernen möchten.
This offer is suitable for people who want to study flexibly.
When using geeignet, make it clear what or whom something is suitable for.
Vorteilhaft — offering a specific advantage
Eine Gruppenkarte wäre für uns vorteilhaft, da sie deutlich günstiger ist.
A group ticket would be advantageous for us because it is considerably cheaper.
A construction with the noun Vorteil often sounds even more natural:
Diese Lösung hat den Vorteil, dass alle Teilnehmenden gemeinsam ankommen.
The advantage of this solution is that all participants arrive together.
Überzeugend — convincing and well supported
Ich finde deinen Vorschlag überzeugend, weil du auch mögliche Risiken berücksichtigt hast.
I find your suggestion convincing because you have also considered possible risks.
2. Wichtig: Express the Degree of Importance
Wichtig is a completely correct word and does not need to disappear from every sentence. For key arguments, however, it is useful to have more precise options.
Entscheidend — decisive for the outcome
Für den Erfolg des Projekts ist eine klare Aufgabenverteilung entscheidend.
A clear division of responsibilities is essential to the success of the project.
Ein entscheidender Vorteil besteht darin, dass keine zusätzlichen Kosten entstehen.
A decisive advantage is that there are no additional costs.
Ausschlaggebend — determining a decision
Ausschlaggebend für meine Buchung war die angebotene persönliche Beratung.
The deciding factor in my booking was the personal consultation that was offered.
This word is especially useful in a letter when you need to explain why you selected a course, service, hotel or event.
Von großer Bedeutung sein — to be of great importance
Für Familien mit kleinen Kindern ist eine gute Verkehrsanbindung von großer Bedeutung.
Good transport connections are of great importance for families with young children.
Eine zentrale Rolle spielen — to play a central role
Bei unserer Entscheidung spielen die Kosten eine zentrale Rolle.
The costs play a central role in our decision.
Auch die Sicherheit sollte bei der Planung eine zentrale Rolle spielen.
Safety should also play a central role in the planning process.
3. Machen: Choose a Verb That Matches the Action
Machen often appears where German offers a more precise verb. Before choosing an alternative, ask yourself what is actually happening: are you organising, carrying out, preparing or taking responsibility for something?
Organisieren — to organise
Instead of:
Wir machen eine Veranstaltung.
We are doing an event.
Use the more precise version:
Wir sollen eine Informationsveranstaltung organisieren.
We are supposed to organise an information event.
Durchführen — to conduct or carry out
This verb is commonly used with surveys, courses, checks, events and studies.
Vor dem Kurs könnten wir eine kurze Umfrage durchführen.
Before the course, we could conduct a short survey.
Die Schulung wurde vollständig online durchgeführt.
The training was conducted entirely online.
Vorbereiten — to prepare
Wir sollten ein abwechslungsreiches Programm vorbereiten.
We should prepare a varied programme.
Sich um etwas kümmern — to take care of something
Ich kümmere mich um die Reservierung. Könntest du die anderen informieren?
I will take care of the reservation. Could you inform the others?
Etwas übernehmen — to take responsibility for something
Ich könnte die Suche nach einer Unterkunft übernehmen.
I could take responsibility for finding accommodation.
This construction is especially helpful in Sprechen Teil 3, when the candidates need to divide responsibilities.
Fixed Expressions with machen
Not every use of machen should be replaced. It is the correct verb in several common expressions:
einen Vorschlag machen — to make a suggestion;
einen Fehler machen — to make a mistake;
sich Sorgen machen — to worry.
For decisions, however, the correct collocation is eine Entscheidung treffen, not eine Entscheidung machen.
4. Sagen: State the Purpose of Your Message
The verb sagen is natural and is not too simple for B2. In a formal letter or an argumentative discussion, however, you can express more precisely whether you are mentioning, emphasising, communicating or drawing attention to something.
Erwähnen — to mention
Trotz meiner Kritik möchte ich erwähnen, dass Ihre Mitarbeiterin freundlich reagiert hat.
Despite my criticism, I would like to mention that your employee responded in a friendly manner.
Betonen — to emphasise
Abschließend möchte ich betonen, dass eine schnelle Lösung für mich besonders wichtig ist.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasise that a quick solution is particularly important to me.
Hervorheben — to highlight
Positiv hervorheben möchte ich die übersichtliche Gestaltung des Kurses.
One positive aspect I would particularly like to highlight is the clear structure of the course.
Hiermit möchte ich Ihnen mitteilen, dass ich den Termin nicht wahrnehmen kann.
I am writing to inform you that I am unable to attend the appointment.
Mitteilen is especially suitable for formal letters and factual information.
Darauf hinweisen — to draw attention to something
Ich möchte Sie darauf hinweisen, dass die Rechnung einen falschen Betrag enthält.
I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the invoice contains an incorrect amount.
Seine Meinung äußern — to express an opinion
In der Diskussion sollen beide Teilnehmenden ihre Meinung äußern und begründen.
During the discussion, both candidates should express and justify their opinions.
5. Sehr: Strengthen a Statement More Precisely
You may certainly use sehr. It only becomes repetitive when it appears before almost every adjective: sehr gut, sehr wichtig, sehr schlecht, sehr teuer.
Äußerst — extremely
Die Reaktion des Kundenservices war äußerst unprofessionell.
The customer service response was extremely unprofessional.
Besonders — particularly
Besonders hilfreich fand ich die konkreten Beispiele im Unterricht.
I found the specific examples in class particularly helpful.
Die Beratung war ausgesprochen freundlich und kompetent.
The consultation was exceptionally friendly and professional.
Erheblich — considerably or substantially
Der Endpreis war erheblich höher als ursprünglich angegeben.
The final price was considerably higher than originally stated.
Deutlich — noticeably or significantly
Die tatsächliche Qualität war deutlich schlechter als erwartet.
The actual quality was noticeably worse than expected.
Always pay attention to common collocations. Erheblich höher sounds natural, while mechanically replacing sehr freundlich with erheblich freundlich would be incorrect.
6. Aber: Use Different Ways to Express Contrast
Aber is a correct and very common conjunction. However, several identical constructions in a row can make your argument sound monotonous.
Jedoch — however
Das Zimmer wirkte auf den Fotos modern. Vor Ort stellte sich jedoch heraus, dass die Möbel beschädigt waren.
The room looked modern in the photographs. However, it became clear on arrival that the furniture was damaged.
Allerdings — however or admittedly
Der Vorschlag klingt interessant. Allerdings könnte die Umsetzung zu teuer werden.
The suggestion sounds interesting. However, implementing it may be too expensive.
Trotzdem — nevertheless
Die Anreise dauert fast drei Stunden. Trotzdem halte ich das Ziel für geeignet.
The journey takes almost three hours. Nevertheless, I consider the destination suitable.
Zwar …, aber … — admittedly…, but…
Die Bahn ist zwar schneller, aber für eine große Gruppe wesentlich teurer.
The train is faster, but it is considerably more expensive for a large group.
Einerseits …, andererseits … — on the one hand…, on the other hand…
Einerseits liegt das Hotel sehr zentral, andererseits überschreitet es unser Budget.
On the one hand, the hotel is very centrally located; on the other hand, it exceeds our budget.
These two-part structures are particularly useful in the Diskussion, because they help you present two sides of an issue.
Vocabulary for Formal Writing at B2 Level
In a Beschwerde or a Bitte um Informationen, using difficult words is not enough. Your text must remain polite, logical and appropriate for a formal context.
Leider → Bedauerlicherweise
Bedauerlicherweise entsprach die angebotene Leistung nicht der Beschreibung.
Unfortunately, the service provided did not match the description.
Ganz → Vollkommen
Die Angaben auf Ihrer Website waren vollkommen missverständlich.
The information on your website was completely misleading.
Vollkommen does not work with every adjective. It is better to learn it in common combinations such as vollkommen einverstanden, vollkommen unverständlich and vollkommen ausgeschlossen.
Jetzt → Nun
Nun möchte ich auf einen weiteren Punkt eingehen.
I would now like to address another point.
Nun is useful for structuring a written text. If you mean “at this exact moment”, jetzt is usually more natural.
Weil → Da
Ich habe mich für Ihr Angebot entschieden, da Sie eine individuelle Betreuung zugesichert hatten.
I chose your offer because you had promised individual support.
The connector da often sounds slightly more formal. However, weil is also correct and entirely appropriate at B2 level.
Deshalb → Daher / Aus diesem Grund
Daher erwarte ich eine zeitnahe Klärung.
I therefore expect the matter to be clarified promptly.
Aus diesem Grund bitte ich Sie um eine angemessene Rückerstattung.
For this reason, I am requesting an appropriate refund.
Ich will → Ich möchte / Ich würde gern
The direct form ich will often sounds too demanding in formal correspondence.
Ich möchte Sie um eine schriftliche Stellungnahme bitten.
I would like to ask you for a written response.
Ich würde gern erfahren, ob noch freie Plätze verfügbar sind.
I would like to know whether any places are still available.

Meiner Ansicht nach spielt dieser Aspekt eine entscheidende Rolle, weil er den Alltag vieler Menschen direkt beeinflusst.
In my view, this aspect plays a decisive role because it directly affects many people’s everyday lives.
Sprechen Teil 3: Gemeinsam etwas planen

Wir können das machen.
We can do that.
More convincing version:
Ich würde vorschlagen, dass wir die Organisation gemeinsam übernehmen. Das hätte den Vorteil, dass wir die Aufgaben schneller erledigen könnten.
I would suggest taking responsibility for the organisation together. The advantage would be that we could complete the tasks more quickly.
Schreiben: Beschwerde
Basic version:
Der Service war sehr schlecht.
The service was very bad.
More formal version:
Bedauerlicherweise entsprach der Service in keiner Weise dem Standard, der in Ihrer Anzeige zugesichert wurde.
Unfortunately, the service did not meet the standard promised in your advertisement in any way.
Basic version:
Ich will wissen, ob es noch Plätze gibt.

Außerdem möchte ich mich danach erkundigen, ob für den genannten Termin noch Plätze verfügbar sind.
I would also like to enquire whether any places are still available for the date mentioned.
Common Mistakes When Using Synonyms
Replacing Every Simple Word
If every sentence is made artificially complex, your language will sound unnatural. Gut, wichtig, machen, sagen, sehr and aber are normal German words. The aim is not to eliminate them completely, but to reduce obvious repetition.
Learning New Words Without Their Collocations
A translation alone is not enough. Learn each word together with the relevant noun, preposition or common construction:
eine Umfrage durchführen;
auf ein Problem hinweisen;
eine Entscheidung treffen;
von großer Bedeutung sein;
Kritik an etwas äußern.
Using an Unfamiliar Word Only to Impress
If you are unsure about a word’s meaning, grammatical pattern or position in the sentence, choose a simpler construction that you know well. A precise and correct phrase is more valuable than a rare word used incorrectly.
Repeating the Same “Advanced” Synonym
If you replace every occurrence of gut with sinnvoll, the text will still be repetitive. Two or three reliable alternatives for different situations are enough.
For wichtig, for example, you could prepare:
entscheidend;
von großer Bedeutung;
eine zentrale Rolle spielen.
Ignoring the Register
A phrase that works well in a formal complaint may sound too heavy in a spontaneous conversation. In the written exam, expressions such as bedauerlicherweise, hiermit möchte ich Ihnen mitteilen and aus diesem Grund are appropriate. In spoken interaction, shorter options such as leider, ich denke and deshalb often sound more natural.
How to Make B2 Vocabulary Automatic
Reading a list of synonyms is not enough. During the exam, you will not have time to search mentally for an alternative to gut or machen. New expressions need to become quickly available when you speak and write.
Use a systematic practice routine:
Listen to the correct pronunciation.
Read two or three examples in different contexts.
Create your own sentence.
Use the expression in a short dialogue or letter.
Review it again after a few days.
Ask for correction if you are unsure whether you have used it correctly.
Here is a useful exercise: take a basic paragraph and improve only three phrases. Do not replace every word. Then check whether the revised text genuinely sounds more precise and natural.
Original version:
Der Kurs war sehr gut, aber die Organisation war nicht gut. Deshalb will ich etwas sagen.
Improved version:
Die Kursinhalte waren ausgesprochen hilfreich. Allerdings war die Organisation wenig überzeugend. Aus diesem Grund möchte ich auf mehrere Probleme hinweisen.
This approach trains more than individual synonyms. It teaches you how to communicate the complete meaning appropriately.

Final Advice for Building a Strong B2 Vocabulary

Learn new language in complete phrases, practise it in realistic exam tasks and focus on two or three reliable alternatives for each word you tend to repeat. The aim is not to sound artificially complicated, but to express your ideas clearly, naturally and convincingly in German.
